Hi. I would like to clean the dials of my 33. Can i remove them from dashboard? I tried to do so but the stiring wheel is stuck and i should pull-off the whole column to succeed. Quite a job for a couple of dirty dials! There isn't much space to work (and watch) beneath the dashboard. My neck wasn't happy.. Does anyone have a smart solution? Thank you!

Dear Guillame,
Removal of the Daf 33 dashboard firstly involves removal of the steering wheel and the ignition/steering lock as well. It's not really that difficult, but time-consuming!
Stage one:
Make sure the steering is in the "straight ahead" position, as this will help when reassembling. Disconnect the earth strap from the battery, to prevent any short-circuits. Now remove the surrounding of the ignition/steering lock, which gives you access to the bolts holding the steering column to the vehicle frame. Disconnect the ignition wiring loom (it is a 3 lead connector). Now undo the two bolts securing the steering column to the steering rack; they're located near the pedals. Next undo the bolts supporting the steering column to the dashboard and remove the steering wheel away from the car.
Stage two:
Open the bonnet and remove the air intake, to gain access to the carburettor and disconnect the choke cable. Return the the car interior; locate and unscrew the three self-tapping screws holding the dashboard panel to the car frame. Now g-e-n-t-l-y pull the plastic panel down and away from the car-DON'T pull too hard and if you feel resistance, STOP! Once there's enough clearance to place your hands behind the speedometer, unscrew the knurled nut holding the speedometer drive cable to the speedometer. Once this is undone the dashboard panel should come away more easily, to give access to the rear of the dashboard.
Stage three:
Identify the connections to the dials; the speedometer has two panel lights and the instrument dial has one. There are four bulbs in the lower section of the instrument dial; the oil pressure, indicator, main beam and ignition warning lights, together with the fuel gauge lead. Taking pictures with one's mobile 'phone helps here! Now disconnect these wires and bulbs, together with the earthing leads. Now unscrew the metal knurled nuts holding the dials' supporting brackets and remove them. The dials can now be removed forwards.
If you're refitting the same dials, I'd recommend cleaning them before installing them! Refitting is the reversal of these instructions and I wish you the best of luck! I've done this myself and the dashboard vibrated much less after I had done it!

Firstly because I also own a 33 and have often wondered about how to remove the dashboard should the need arise. Secondly, because this query proves that we are right to keep these message boards open! Still far better than that other place for this sort of thing.

I'm pleased to see this question and great answer from Andrew. Firstly because I also own a 33 and have often wondered about how to remove the dashboard should the need arise. Secondly, because this query proves that we are right to keep these message boards open! Still far better than that other place for this sort of thing. Well done! And Andrew - this could turn into a mag article... Richard, it did, a few magazines ago! I explained about changing my speedometer, as it was reading too slowly. One advantage of being a member of the DAF Owners Club is you have the opportunity to read really useful articles about looking after your Daf!

I could pay by transfer or Paypal: a check in Pounds from a French account in Euros is certainly possible but bank rates must be excessive.. as they always are. Do you think it's possible?
