Icarry a split oak log with me and put the flat side against the car and jack underneath it - usuallt works as it dristributes the load across a borader area - make sure the log is hard wood or it could split under the strain

Hi Graham,
even if my jacking points look ok i do not use the body but try where possible to use the subframe or under the suspention, it was easy with the 66 because of the de dion tube.
as scoots said the other best option is to use a block of wood to distribute the weight, however never jack the car up on the section that looks like chasis rails as this is not very srtong and it is actually not the chasis but a cooling tube for the variomatic that is why all dafs have vents on the lower valance at the front and in the bumpers of the volvo 340's, the heat caused by the friction of the belts would damage the variomatic. another reason why they should never be rolling road tested.

Can they not fail the car on the MOT if you don't have jacking points?

hi all.
i will always try to jack a car on the suspension if a can. i dont trust jacking points since one collapsed while i was changing a tyre on a 3 year old dagenham dustbin.
the jacking points on my mk1 44 are disappearing into the sills as well. common fault on older cars i am afraid. i will be taking them off, cleaning them up, reinforcing and patching the sills, and putting them back on to solid metal.
the MOT tester will not fail a car if the jacking points have been removed, as long as the place where they were is solid.
if they comment on lack of jacking points, you can always say "what jacking points.. are there supposed to be any then" and there probably aren't more than a handful of testers in the country that would KNOW if there are supposed to be any or not.
good thing with these cars. most testers have nothing to compare them with so if they are not sure they will often pass it. (eg..weak springs, or designed to sit very close to the stops). great at times.
remove or repair as you see fit.
good luck
