hi mac.
at the minute my mk1 44 has a full set of the prehistoric 135/14 michelin tyres on it. these were on the car when i got it and have been on it for the 20years that the car was parked up. i don't know how long they were on it before that.
that said, the 4 actually on the car are perfect. they were checked inside and out before mot, and again after doing 500miles. spot on.
i did this as i could not believe that tyres would last this long without perishing/cracking etc but have been assured that the tyres are OK. the only one with any cracking on the wall is the spare.
i was looking for 5 new tyres, but cannot find them. the nearest i can get is 145/14 and a set of 5 will cost about £160 fitted which i have not got at the minute.
i will keep a very close eye on the michelins for now and start saving for a new set.
145/14s are still out there, but you are quite limited in choice.
let us know what options you can find.

I have just changed all the tyres on Little Belter with 135/13 budget tyres which I bought on ebay for £50. They are brand new and I picked them up in Milton Keynes. I fitted them myself in the garage which is not that hard to do. Got them balanced by the garage that does the MOT for me. Total cost was £64 for 4 new tyres fitted and balanced. I also bought 4 new tyres Firestone F590 155/13 for my 66 for £76. Will do the same here so it will be done for under £100. It might be that 14's are harder to get than the 13's. If it is for your 66 Richard, I have 4 wheels here which are 13's if it makes life easier for you. Were the 66's fitted with 14 and 13 inch wheels then? By the way, her tracking needs to be done desperately as one wheel is definitely pointing out whilst the other one is pointing straight forward.

I'm sure that I've got more than 5 wheels with that lot that came with the 2 66's.

the 13" wheels on the 66 were either an optional extra or suplied with the marathon all the others got the 14" even the vovlo 66 L
i think that i have a few marathon wheels in the garage if you get stuck.
i really need to start to get rid of some of the stuff in the garge i am sure that i could build a 66!
i like the 14" on the 44 as it also gives it a slightley higher gearing and you would be suprised how much better they ride!!

hi there. not a bad price on the tyres. i have found one place round here that can get me bridgestone 145/14s fitted for £40 each with only a 2 day wait. not bad. i will get some when money is available. three different tyre specialists have now checked my stone age michelins and agree that while they are old, the four on the car are fine at the minute but i do want to change them when i can. i may donate them to the local museum by the way mac, most photos/brochures i have seen on the 66 show the wheels to be all silver with a black plastic centre cap. no black paint at all. happy motoring. paul44

Yes. Dimples is a good word for those bits. I've often wondered what to call them! And yes, they should be black. The original wheels with these dimples, had them painted on with a matt black paint.

i thought they were cut outs rather than painted dimples.

Early 44s, all standard 55s had wheels like yours with the holes in.
55 Marathons had 13" "dimpled" wheels, later (post 1973) 44s, 46s and 66s had the "dimpled" wheels - some 13" and some 14".

I've just had 4 Camacs fitted to my 44 145/70R14 @£30 each Including fitting& balancing.I have no hesitation in using this make of tyre I used them on a previous Volvo and they gave excellent service. If any of you are using "old"tyres on you DAF please change them, they may look perfect; but be aware,if you should be unfortunate and have to make an insurance claim, insurance assessors check the tyres and the claim could be refused when it is seen how old the tyres are.I saw this happen years ago when a customers car was involved in an accident, nothing to do with tyre failure but it was considered the age of the tyres could have been a contibuting factor. We all know what some insurance companies are like!!But for your own safety get some new boots. starider.

Just to back up the 'don't use old tyres' group - when my minor first returned to the road it was still shod with the same tyres that it had when it went off the road 8 years before. We'd never let them go flat, and they looked fine, went through the MOT fine, so off we trundled.
A few thousand miles in we got a lousy out-of-balance vibration from the back of the car - having checked it out one of the rear tyres had thrown a great chunk of tread off, exposing the wire reinforcements. A temporary swap to the equally (actually older) spare and we headed home (very gingerly) and a new set of tyres was fitted asap.

Okay, so given that I singed my hand yesterday I decided that I'd just go and take some pictures of the Daf, and while I was out there thought I'd check the tyre date codes. The oldest datecode I can find is on the front - 135R14s, which date from 1982. The back ones are much newer... 1989. And the spare - no date code. Of course, this then lead to wailing as I realised that I now have to source new tyres for it - which is as much fun as sourcing them for the minor... Since they're the same size...

STA where did you get these from and fitted? my ones are of indeterminate age but I don't like the look of 'em one bit they have the tell tale cracks on the walls of tyres of some age - given the car has only done 20000 in 37 years these tyres could be 15 years old

Given that Jejy's done 75,000 miles and is wearing 26 year old rubber (and the spare I couldn't find a date code on).... 37 years and 20k miles - not entirely improbable.
