Hi folks. Thought I'd ask for some help as I'm having trouble with my 33. I'm trying to get it back on the road after 10 years lay up and have encountered a problem starting it in gear. As I'm relatively new to the Daf scene I'm keen for all the help I can get. It has recently been fitted with new wheel cylinders and shoes and now we can't get it to start in gear without it trying to run away!! It started fine before we fitted the new brakes and it's become a mystery as to this new fault. Can anyone shed any light on this ? I've fitted a lot of new parts and I'm keen to get it to the MOT man for the big ticket to freedom ! All help and advice would be appreciated as I know this may seem like a trivial fault to some of you

Well hello and welcome.
I'm sure that you will get plenty of suggestions and advice on here soon. I suspect that it could possibly be that the clutch shoe lining(s) may have "rusted off" through the years of none use. In effect, this means that the clutch is engaged.
I'm no expert though - I knwo how to wash and polish my 33, but when it comes to doing teccy things, I rely a lot on others. Mind you, I hope that Mr R and others are impressed that I have given a sort of teccy reply!!

Thanks for your reply. I'm no mechanical whiz kid but a friend of my father's has been doing his best with it although it's all new to him. As I live in Northern Ireland I don't really know anyone with another 33 yet. Before the recent work was done overhauling the brakes it did start ok without problem. Since I've owned it I've also fitted a complete new exhaust I got from Danny. It's had a new battery and coil but this recent fault has but a damper on things. Only short term I hope though lol. Thanks again for the advice and I hope some others can help shed somelight.

Certainly sounds like Richard is on the nail with the clutch. Apparently it's a fairly common failing, especially in a car that's been standing for a long time. With a centrifugal clutch, the only things that can make it try to drive without throttle are either the idle speed being way too high (so the clutch is engaging) or the clutch engaging before it should. Assuming it's not revving its bolts off at idle (which you'd probably have noticed), that leaves the clutch. Bad news is - it's engine out for that. Good news is (a) that's not too hard on there and (b) it won't be anything to do with the brakes work you've just done

Yep, Richard is right the linings fall off and jam up the drum, very common, i have had this happen to my 33 years ago, i came up to a line of traffic and only just stopped!
best bet when getting new shoes is to have the one which are rivited on,
you will have the engine out in a few hours!

Hi 33 owner, yep it does sound very much as though a lining(s) has fallen of a shoe and become jammed between drum and another shoe. Spunkymonkey 33 had that happen with the previous owner. When they stand about for a few years the rust gets between the bonding (glue), as Paul said most owners fit rivited ones if they change them, however the bonded ones are a lot better these days. Getting the engine out is no problem, straight out the front or push the car away. Believe the Club holds spare shoes.
Regards Bob.

Hi,Fairly certain everyone is correct, I recently bought a 44 which had stood with a new clutch for 18 years, I turned the clutch drum to hear rubbing, pulled out engine, pulled off drum,3 new lining segments fell out!! ---Could also be clutch drum bearing seized or clutch segments worn down to metal and jambed into drum. The most likely is loose segments.Which ever it is I'm afraid it's engine out!!Keep us all informed when you have found the problem. starider.

sorry for wait. been working nights all week.
one other thing to check if you have been working on the brakes.
do the brake lights work properly?? if the switch has jammed on this opens the vacuum valve for the low hold system. This can raise the tickover enough to engage the clutch.
worth checking and easier than pulling the clutch out.
