So, I've been fiddling today, and we have some positive developments one of which is that the Hazard lights now work (yay! I don't have to remove the switch for the MOT!), however there's no tell-tale, and the light on the dash doesn't come on either.
Is it meant to be the big red possibly-was-once-a-light next to the hazard light switch?
Cheers...
[The brakes are still a bit - well - you have to press 'em a long way before they work. They seem to actually work, and the reservoir seems fairly full. The front adjusters are right (I didn't get as far as the back ones)...]

Hmmm. Are you sure you're not confusing the Low Ratio Hold switch for a hazard light switch? DAF 44s (nor as far as I recall any DAFs) were fitted with hazard lights as standard.
It's quite a common thing that MoT testers see the button with the "triangle" on it, press it and nothing happens. They then try to fail the car on faulty hazard lights. But, of course, the "triangle" is a picture of a mountain, and the low ratio hold switch is just that.
Always interesting to see the smile on the tester's face, when you explain it.
That all said, you say that the hazard lights work, so I guess someone must have retro fitted a circuit.

Well, it looks like a standard fitment to me (but then I'm kinda short on DAF experience! ) I guess it could've been pinched off a later DAF; this is the switchgear: That red-?light on the bottom left, I was pondering that being the hazard light tell-tale. Certainly the indicator tell-tale on the dash doesn't seem to work when the Hazard lights are going (it does work when the indicators are going). There's a close up of the Hazard light switch here: Otherwise I'm not sure what the tell-tale is - and equally not sure what's meant to be the hazard light tell-tale...? I thought that the manual might be of help...yeah...no. The dashboard in the manual is vastly different to the one actually in the car (to the point of having a cubby-hole illustrated where these switches are)...

hi kate.
i don't know if those switches are original or not but you do need a tell tale light for the hazards for MOT.
you either need to have one or cover the switch for the MOT and say you haven't got hazards. either will pass the test.
keep up the good work

HI Kate yes you ae right it is, i didnt even know this until i just went out to check, i dont think that my last daf 44 had them!! so no its not a retro fit, it took me ages to get them working, i had to keep turning the switch on and off untill they started working Paul

Aha. As the old saying goes, we learn something new everyday! I really didn't know that hazards had been fitted as standard. Must be just on the "later" 44s. Very illuminating!

Hrm, well, I'll see if I can coax the hazard tell-tale into working; it doesn't appear to be a replaceable bulb, so I'll either make it work or whip the switch out for the duration of the test...
