hi all daf heads. I am an australian living in france and just recently feel for the Daf66 super luxe. As I was giving it the once over checking brake fluid levels and what not, I noticed my raditor level was low. so being from a hot country I did what any australian would do and topped it up with water. Luckly for me I mentioned this to my neighbour who eplained that its not a good idea because the northern hemisphere is cold and the water will freeze in the hoses expanding at the same time causing lots of damage. It seems now Ihave to purge the whole system and I dont know how to do that. does any one have any solutions? Another thing the water pumps arent working for the windscreen and front light wipers. cheers in advance

hi. you do not need to purge the whole system. just take off the top radiator pipe. drain of a litre or two of water and top up with neat antifreeze. run the engine for 5 minutes to make sure there are no airlocks in the system and the antifreeze will mix in with the water. easy.
if you want to drain the whole system, remove the bottom radiator pipe. refill the system slowly, to avoid airlocks and start the engine without the radiator cap on, and the heater turned on to hot, and top up as any air in the system finds its way out through the radiator cap. this is normally enough to get rid of air locks in older cars. again easy, just takes a bit longer.
with screen washers make sure there is power to the pumps and the pipes are not blocked. these can be replaced/unblocked fairly easily and cheaply.
happy motoring.

Hi Mick, and welcome to Daf ownership. You'll find that the learning curve isn't all that steep - they really are pretty straightforward. In fact, sometimes that's the whole problem - you lookk at a job that needs doinf and think it can't be that simple! On the subject of which, Paul, I'm having a little trouble with your instructions above. Which is the top radiator hose on my 33??? Joe

Well, if you find one can you let me know please? I was (seriously) asked this morning if I could help one of our Teenager's friends out with a car repair. It seems someone ran into her and caused a bit of front-end damage. Her dad's straightened the metal out but doesn't feel mechanically confident enough to replace the radiator and a garage has quoted over £500. The really puzzling bit is, apparently she's already tracked down and bought the radiator - for her Citroen 2CV!! !!!!

hi joe. i have seen the front GRILLE on 2CVs listed as a radiator . makes no sense to me but i drive a DAF so i can't really say much. The front grilles for those are becoming rarer by the minute and are very expensive but £500 still seems a lot. tell you friend to send in trading standards if the garage tries to charge her for anti freeze though paul44
