Ouch!! Let me know should you want the details for Intertruck Joe. They're a five minute walk from where Matt lives and both myself and Matt have had shoes redone by them at very reasonable prices and they have been fine in Gavina and Goldie since. From memory mine cost between £50 - £60. If you don't have anywhere decent locally then I'm sure Matt wouldn't mind if you posted them to him, he could deal with Intertruck and post them back to you, like he did for Stef. Stef, have you run yours yet and have they been ok? You will also need to remove the old linings first as I got my wrists slapped for not doing so with mine. Do let me know if there's anything we can do to help.

Cheers, G but hopefully I won't need them. I meant it about the Evostick - getting her back on road is a priority right now with her owner's test coming up. Otherwise I'd be having fun doing the valves and porting on Sheila instead of faffing around with this one. So time and not having to send anything away is of the essence.
She's been driving absolutely fine on the remaining 5 and (amazingly) the loose linings are completely undamaged, as are the shoes - to the point that I could match the linings to the shoes by the glue stains!
In use all the glue really has to do is hold them in place when it's sitting still or idling - once the clutch engages friction should take over. So they've been well cleaned and re-attached with contact adhesive. I may put a couple of copper rivets through as well for peace of mind.
After all, what's the worst than can happen? ;D

;D Fair one, but it works like this : We said we'd get a new MOT on her before Iliria passes her test. Once that test is passed, I'll still do any work needed but any parts are her responsibility. Her test is in about 2 1/2 weeks so as long as the Evostick lasts that long, I don't have to pay for the new linings. Simples

OUCHSounds like a new member of the GRINDER Club has just paid his dues. You don't have a spare set you can have relined Joe? John No grinding involved From the look of the shoes, the remaining ones were taking the drive up before these made contact with the drum - there wasn't even a scuff on them! So the linings have gone back on and see what happens.

No mate not used mine yet we found a set in all the parts that we have and i used them instead before the others got to me, the new set look good and will be going in Onne's 46 in the next couple of weeks.

Mine where like that too all 4 but they where all secondary enagement shoes. I still have the old set if there the same size you could have them and get em relined in your own time. No fee not even postage your advice recently has been invaluable.

Well, her new "budget brand" wheel bearing arrived today from bearing King, in a box labelled "BDL Ball and Roller Bearings". Never heard of them.
But the bearing inside the box is made by NSK (who own RHP) - hardly a company I would have described as an unknown budget brand, so that's all good! I guess the "budget" bit means that they send you whatever they have excess stock of?

Speaking of clutch shoes and having discussed the matter earlier with Matt, if anyone is in need of Intertruck's services then the cost (barring any price increases) is £60 which includes return postage to Matt.
Nothing in it for Matt other than the happiness derived from keeping another Daf on the road.

It's a bit odd that because Budget Brand's are usually completely unstamped and are almost exclusively from China. NSK are Japanese and I've never known them described as budget. You might have just got lucky and the wrong item was in the wrong box! I take it the bearing was less than the daft money you could get them locally for? I apologise in advance if the above post was mind-numbingly tedious.

It was a lot less - about 7 quid including postage compared to I shudder to think how much up here. Plus, the postage was actually less then the petrol it would have cost to get one from Llandudno and it would have been here overnight if I hadn't ordered on a Friday evening so not too much difference in the waiting time either. In case anyone hasn't caught on yet, I'd recommend this place wholeheartedly!

I don't think there's any more welding to worry about - I've also replaced an old sock that was over the driver side heater valve (valve missing) and replaced it with a spot-welded metal plate, and removed the sock and fixed the valve on the n/s, so the heater should be more effective. The socks I burned. So it should be oily work from now on. I couldn't be bothered to do any today (it was cold) but hopefully the engine will go back tomorrow, which will free up my trolley jack to do the bearing and front bump stops. Oh, and must put the driver's seat back in sometime I suppose

OK, now I'm seriously running out of patience. Ignored the sleet showers today to get Isabel's engine back in. All went reasonably to plan and, with a little petrol poured in the carb, she fired up happily. No clutch rattle and no blow from the hotspot pipes. But there seemed to be a slight blow elsewhere. Running my hands round the joints and silencer I couldn't feel any leaks so put my jand over the tail pipe to see if there was pressure and I was imagining it. There was no pressure but there was a sudden increase in the noise which allowed me to find it. The right hand heat exchanger has got an internal leak. That's confirmed by putting the heater hose on and sniffing - pure exhaust! Not quite sure what to do about that. Haven't got the cash or time to try and get a replacement but I'm not 100% happy about making repairs to something that can pump exhaust into the car. I'm honestly beginning to feel that this is the first "bad" buying decision I've ever made. I guess it had to happen sooner or later and I'll get it all sorted one way or another but right now I honestly could just weigh the bloomin' thing in. And I have no beer in the house

She's not in use at the moment and looking at something else might help me put the matches down before I open her fuel cap As for the problems, they're mostly stuff that wouldn't be obvious until they got worse. They would have probably shown up with an in-depth inspection but I don't think she's had one of them for a while (including the last MOT by the look of some of it*) - I know I only gave her a very quick look over to make sure nothing would fall off on the way home. Guess you live & learn * Like the completely missing centre exhaust mount. The mounts are on the body, so it's clear to anyone looking there's meant to be one there, but there's nothing on the pipe to connect the rubbers to. No-question 7.2.1.1(b) fail for that, "an exhaust system mounting missing, or in such condition that it does not fully support the exhaust system". Quite right too - if the pipe fractures with no front support you're liable to go pole-vaulting. You''ll certainly be leaving mangled debris in front of the car following you!
