Ages ago (or at least it seems it) I got an old 46 exhaust from DOC HQ. But with everything that has gone on, well I haven't got round to doing anything with it.....until yesterday when I took it to a friendly garage. RESULT - 5 Sparkling new tyres and a fixed exhaust = One smooth running Daf. She is running quietly and sweetly. Probably the best since I've owned her. I'm at work today so I thought it would be a good idea to take her in and give her a little run. Why is it whenever I try and do something nice, or try to enjoy myself something must come along to take a giant shit all over it? Queue stage left someone trying (unsuccessfully) to perform a three point turn in a Corsa outside my office but an hour into the working day.... Bugger. I've managed to rub most of it our, the bumper is slightly out of line now. Although Dutch Engineering did triumph as the Corsas' plastic bumper was utterly wrecked. The plastic shattered and it has left a proper big hole in it. And who says old cars are unsafe?

It might be worth mentioning that my Polo has had yet another dummy spitting episode and refuses to move. God alone knows what is up with. All the electrical stuff on it is basically VOODOO in my opinion. So yet again the ever reliable Goldie is pressed into daily service. I could easily run a Daf everyday. But I might need two (or at least, tell my wife I do) just to ensure at least one of them will start on a frosty morning.

we've had down to -11 here so far. Nothing stops the daf from starting.. just remember to bring a bottle of hot water out in the morning to get the door handles to work though.

I would love to use one as a daily but it's impossible as I need a van for work. That and the 30k plus a year I cover would keep me busy on routine maintenance.

30k a year?! Last week Goldie ticked over that milestone after FORTY of them! She has been doing sterling service trekking up and down the M1 in freezing temperatures. Cutting quite the dash in the office car park at times too.... And still she plods on through the snow! I do feel guilty for using her in such weather, but then I feel guilty when I don't use her. So I can't really win to be honest! Hope to make it to the winter lunch, weather and work permitting!

I somehow managed to leave the sidelights on the other day. With predictable results. I popped out this afternoon to get the FORTH battery I've had die on me this winter!

Fitting a "sidelights on" warning buzzer isn't difficult. Just wire a buzzer to the sidelight circuit, via a relay that's swiched OFF by the ignition circuit & you'll have fair warning that the sides are on when you've switched off the engine. Only problem is when you park in a spot requiring you to leave your car lights on "during the hours of darkness" but who does that these days?

After I had flattened my Defender battery a couple of times, a pal made me fantastic little box which instead of buzzing, actually said in a female voice "you have left your lights on" This was wired with a live from the interior light so when I opened the door with lights on it spoke to me. I think I had the only talking Land Rover !! Perhaps it's time to have the only talking Daf

Spot the difference..... Are you going to have a new garage put up? Neighbours had their 1930's garage "Made over" recently, with new facias and steel roof and door. Gave the company that did it a ring cos ours is fairly rotten. They quoted £1800 just for the makeover. If you believe the adverts you could supposedly buy a whole new garage for that!!! Love the Canal pic.

Daf Pilgrimage. So after a nice four hour blast down to deepest Essex who should we find ourselves behind but Steve and his Orange 66. If that isn't an odd coincidence I don't know what is!!! Already we were causing a stir, a group of 6 or 7 Dutch Daffers congregated around us in the queue to board the ferry!! Saturday morning, and bright and early we are off the ferry and on the to crazy motorways around Rotterdam.... We sped through for a bit of breakfast in an odd little place I've wanted to visit for a while, Baarle-Nassau/Hertog. A town that couldn't decide whether it wanted to be Belgian or Dutch. So it chose to be both! So we had already done three countries in the space of a few hours! Then on too Eindhoven, and the obligatory photo opportunities that would bring.... (this picture doesn't capture the comical shouting over the tannoy of the security guard on the gate. Bellowing "SHHHHTOPP" in the most stereotypical dutch accent you have ever heard!!) And on to the Daf Museum, and place of magic and wonder. If you haven't ever visted I have only one question...why not!?? It is an exceptional place that would shame the museums of many a more prestigious marque! And as we stepped outside we saw this 55 Estate in the car park!!! Again what a coincidence!!! I'm not sure who it belongs too like. Eindhoven has more to offer than that, of course it would be rude not to sample the local culture and cuisine..... So onto Sunday. And a blast down to Sittard, past the VDL factory at Born where my Daf was made, then accidentally missing a junction off the dual carriageway and ending up in Germany (Country number 4 of this trip) we made it to Dafhobby!! This place if quite simply amazing. If the Daf Museum if the heart of our passion, then Dafhobby is the Brain. You have to see it to believe it. You could build yourself a new Daf from the stuff in here!!! Vlaamse Frites!!! Bichon Frise!! Ice Cream!!!! A familiar car!!! Then we had to leave, and a long trip up to Delft via the Kinderdijk... Lots of Windmills. The onto Delft, possibly one of the prettiest little towns in the Netherlands.... Poffertjes!!! Then monday morning, just enough time to pop into Albert Heijn to stock up on Dutch provisions before the ferry home... Then four and bit hours driving home from Harwich in the pitch dark and driving rain, which was not that fun. Especially since water was coming up through the floor!! This has been recitifed with the welding done for Goldie's MOT!!! All in all, 800ish miles without a single flaw. DAF WINT WEER.

Due to some fiscal difficulties, Goldie is my only car at the moment. And how pleasant it is to commute in such a wonderful vehicle. Not really anything to report, which is great. She is a proper little trooper. Now nearly on 33,000 miles! The only maintenance topping up fuel (the petrol gauge still works only when it feels like it !) And wash now and again. That is not to say my Dafing activities haven't been busy. I have been working on this little project for a while: www.variomatic.co.ukLet me know what you think.

Well, Goldie is looking fab, and as for your "special project", well, absolutely stunning! Fantastic that you have scanned so much material. We must find some of the "missing" magazines for you, if we haven't already.

Am loving the adventures of Goldie! She still looks lovely and I am pleased that she is behaving herself. Give her a pat for me. She would look better with a NL sticker on that rear panel I would love to go over to Holland again and see the sights. Daf Hobby appears to look very similar to Essex Daf Central in many ways, although I would imagine that there is less tea. All the best. Ken

Goldie's petrol gauge was never reliable Joe,nice to see she is giving you alot of enjoyment Glad we saved her from the jaws of death at a local fire station, what a waste that would have been

I am so glad you did. It would have been a travesty for such a barely used car to have been scrapped. She honestly puts cars a fraction of her age to shame.

Wow Joe, that is very different to the last time I saw it. What's the plan, double, single?? Is that a power supply I see on the fence? I am imagining a wood burner in the corner, four post ramp, a shelf of polish etc. and a comfy chair.

Post by joe on Jul 31, 2015 8:23:15 GMT
The plan is a double covering all that area really. And yes that is a power supply so there will be lights and plugs in it! It won't be high enough for a four post ramp mind!
