well as we speak my new steed awaits me in a derby garage.... shes a tan sort of coloured 46 with a decent mot and once the deal is done she will be home and pressed into daily duties for my 10 mile commute to work and back. sorry.. wheres my manners.. my names Nick, I am a total classic car head, got a pair of humber sceptres,m a superminx, a bedfor d HA campervan that has 40% of its shell missing due to rust a transit mk2 camper and various other mechanical odities dotted about... did have a honda c70 but ive just traded that for the daf..
when she arrives I shall get some pics up !
just out of interest (total newbie to daf) what sort of mpg can I expect from a 2 pot 850 warbler ?? it cant be worse than the humber lol (20-24) I remember vaguely in my youth doing the belts on one of these when I used to be a mechanic and the test drive was surprisingly nippy to say the least having never driven one . . .
ho ho ho christmas has indeed come early ;D

Hi Nick and welcome! Not sure about the 46 but our 33 (slightly lighter, probably less aerodynamic and only 746cc) gives a long-term avarage of about 33.5mpg with mid 40s pretty easy on a long run. The best we've managed was 48mpg from Anglesey to Essex, then about 44 on the way back. Don't forget that "surprisingly nippy" back then is positively sluggish compared to a lot of modern stuff - it wasn't that ling ago that sub 12 sec 0-60 was considered reasonable for a road car and anything approaching 10 secs was pretty good. Now anything in double figures seems to be laughed at. Doesn't stop them being nippy in real world use though Really looking forward to the pics and hopefully we'll get to see it around when the show / meeting seasons starts again? Dafs are NOT required to be "show condition" to attend shows btw cos everyone (except for some MG owners) seem to love seeing them still being used ;D

Hi Nick and welcome. That is one lovely Humber and a seriously blinged Monkey Bike. I've got a Triumph 1500TC auto, a manual 1500TC (in Coventry) and a Triumph 1300FWD which is being slowly but surely modded. Daf'wise.... I have a 44 undergoing surgery in Essex Daf Central care of two very sound blokes (Matt and Pete). There are bits of threads scattered around on the forum. Try Little White Daf (I think) aka Snowdrop.
Good luck with yours.

dafdaffer I know this might sound cheeky but IF you are coming down from Derby Paul needs some rims picking up from munceyboyjoe.. I was supposed to have done it but lost the text with Joes number on. I could meet you at cheltenham and take the rims from you to store till Paul got up to get them from me? anyways back to my drive home. Car sat at 60-65 on the speedo no probs, probably my technique from standing starts but ill get the hang of it, doesnt really try to change up till it hits 45-50 but the drive back was good once we were cruising, far quieter than I ever thought it would be, can already seeme not being backsided with the clutch in the humber again lol... one thing though..... put the wipers on and the charge light came on is this because its dynamo? was sat at a junction so would think brake lights, headlights were on.. also what is knob to right of steering wheel that has what looks like a screen symbol on with a wiggly line across it.. and why would my fuel gauge read from empty to FULL as it runs out ??

Welcome to the world of Daf motoring! When you're accellerating are you burying the accellerator pedal deep into the carpet? The idea is to floor it until you reach the desired speed when you lift off and then find the level accellerator pedal to maintain that speed. If you treat it like a regular auto then you won't be accellerating very quickly. As for the charge light, the aircooled tend to do this. The tickover is quite low and is insufficient for charging the dynamo hence the light comes on. Once you pull away again it should go off, otherwise it's the regular checking dynamo belt and tension etc. I'm sure a fellow 44 owner will be able to tell you about the switchgear. The paper bag is more than welcome at Essex, we saw her at the Spectacular last year and she's more than welcome to pay us a return visit at this year's event.

From what I remember driving it last October it was a little slow in changing up for "motorway" work. Pretty sure DD had set the vario up for nippy use round town. You can alter the responsiveness of the box to some extent by adjusting the linkage to the vacuum valve bolted behind the carb. There is a "book" setting but adjusting a little either side of that can tailor it to personal choice / driving habits / use patterns. Basically (and within reason) the longer the rod is adjusted, the earlier it will start trying to change up. Only move it one turn at a time though cos it's pretty sensitive! Dynamo light coming on at idle with electrical load on (or even without!) is pretty normal. For some reason the wipers on Betty seem to do the same, more so than the lights or even the 40w per channel stereo. Not completely sure why the wiper motor should have such an effect but, as long as it goes out again as you pull away, it shouldn't be a problem - Betty's been like if through last winter and the cold so far this year and not given starting problems. And she's a 6v version! Fuel gauge threw me as well when I drove it - DD was sitting beside me a little worse for the night before ( ) and I didn't like to ask if we had enough fuel to get to the museum seeing as it was sitting on an empty tank. By the time we got there it had refilled itself nicely ;D Think that was down to a replacement tank sender. For some reason Daf changed from "sender resistance increases" as tank fills to "sender resistance decreases" as tank fills (or the other way round???) so wrong model year sender means gauge works perfectly in reverse!

ah cheers for that.. can I isolate the gauge and run it the reverse polarity??? or reverse the gauge polarity???
no didnt bury the pedal in the carpet.. 3/4 till she hit 60 then backed off till I felt it holding gear and then gently added till she hit 65.. (75 at one point whilst not paying attention)

If its at the top rightmost side of the dash its your windscreen washers. Joe I might add that 46 switchgear is a little different to that on a 44.
As for the change up lengthen the vaccum linkage by one turn it will change up at 33 mph and sit happilly at 78mph.

Oh forgot to add I thought 46s had alternators?
My dyno keeps up quite happily at idle and with everything electric on. It maybe worth stripping it cleaning it and replacing the brushes

sorry typed this yesterday but lost internet connection so sorry if points have already been covered Hi rottie glad to hear that you got home ok, ;D re the rims if paul wants them then i could give them to him later on in the year if that is any good? the car was set up more for round town driving when i had her, so it changed up quick around 25-30mph then would kick back down around 50 mph as i didnt use her much on motorways so it sounds like the throttle linkage has been adjusted again. very reliable car though. the binicle was changed to a 44 one as the speedo went faulty and under-read so the fuel guage is back to front (changing the wires does not help) the car has an alternator so check the fan belt as i think it was near to changing when i had her so check that its tight and ok the squiggly wired switch was (i think) a rear demist in the past. i owned the car for a year as part of a deal for the sale of another daf but to be fair it was one of the nicest dafs i have driven. enjoy daffing ;D

Check your Belt tension re the flappy sound as it should make a faint whining noise sometimes indestinguishable and nothing else.
Interior light is operated on both door and can be switched on manually. It took me a full year before i worked out how. Grasp the whole unit and push to the back of the car it will click like a switch and should turn on.
