well when i picked her up she had 58 831 on the clock... put 20 litres in (it went to just over half)and ran her back and to an fro work a couple of times.. been out playing in it and decided today as the needle was wavering to put another 20 litres in... after all done 134 miles and in the humber I would be well over the 20 litre range (closer 35 ) and needle went all the way to the top and wedged itself firmly there.. no amount of roundabouts could get it to wiggle.. so its getting high 40s I would think

that rod under the bonnet on the carb was loose as anything so still trying to find where it should be but yeah I do enjoy warbling along in her.. bodily it really is in cracking condition.. so this weekend when I drop the belt tray for a look I plan on getting the shutz gun out and blasting the underside

That rod metal linkage on the carb goes from the carb to the vaccum solonoid. I will try and dig out a photo as I think it will be the same as on a 44 edit not the best pic I know but if that rod is what I think your talking about it shows it. Paul

sorry Paul my bad wording... I meant where it should be in context as to length as the lock nuts were just floating about on it.. car still seems to rev its heart out till about 50 and only backing off throttle lets it change... but then if the rods been shaking about it could be set to anything at the moment.. it IS in place between the valve block and the carburettor, thanks for taking the time to post that picture though

Humph! Point taken Richard. Yes I do read most threads and learn loads of fascinating things from most of you - and I STILL make lots of mistakes. Second childhood I suppose.

Lovely. And do I spy an HA Viva poking its nose out next to a Hillman/Singer? When was the last time we saw HA Viva around? Or even HB and HC, come to mind?
(I have a soft spot for them!)

Oh my word. Bit of a challenge there. I was always intrigued by the Bedford Beagle (I think) based on HA van. And even the basic van had a certain attraction.

Reminds me that an advert or brochure for the HA that used to boast of the optional paint lacquer customers could opt for to keep the shine lasting longer.

my biggest worry is getting the front on straight to be honest. . .although the rest looks bloomin' awful you know as well as I do that when the angle grinder hits it it will lose vast amounts of rust from view...
amazingly with a splash of fuel in the carb it runs.. knocks like hell but it runs lol

well after 3 hours of cursing... stuck coach bolts (the square headed ones) and manhandling the vario about on my own I finally got the aluminium spine onto BB and she is ready for road test..
what a chore.. never going to make that mistake again I can tell you.. can see now why the twin belt setup is so much better, done my best to get the pulleys in line but they are still a fraction out.. no way im levering about on that aluminium backbone to straighten them up either.. think ill make a set of new bottom rails so one can be used for fine tracking the alignment.. ;D
massive thanks go out again to Stef and my fellow Derby Daffers (well you are my local chapter) . . oh and Stef.. for the record the only difference between that carrier and mine was that the 4 bolts that held BB's on were properly captive into the aluminium meaning they werent as bad to get off as the ones on the backbone you supplied which were only captivated by one of the nut flats.. (if that makes sense??)
will put some pictures of the destruction up tomorrow as its dark now and ive laid on the floor so long my left side is cold and numb....
oh yeah.. the belt is now at 2mm and sitting 4mm further into the pulley than it was before...

Great stuff, you are becoming good at the old wario stuff now if you think that the one belt system is heavy should try the double ;D ps noticed this week in PC that there is a Dormobile in rust in peace with a one piece opening tail gate

Don't forget its a 2 pot boxer so you will never get it silky smooth. Rough running will most likely be a mixture of 3 things on this engine 1. Ignition timing 2. Points gap 3. No hotspots making it run a touch cool, its cold outside. Joe will be chasing you with spanners if you go for the mixture screw before you've done the first 2 Excellent news and now you can get on with enjoying daffing.

i appreciate with two cylinders its never going ot be super silky smooth... but it should be smoother and easier starting than it is... dont see any reason to touch the mixture mate, nothing has been altered and they dont change the setting by themselves... re timing.. I have a static gun without the advance/retard on that posh ones have.. am I to presume I have to get my marks 5mm apart or something to be correct? ? got to put a new carter valve in as well.. see if that makes a difference.. turns out one of our vehicle fitters used to work for daf and he had one in his toolbox still.. after all these years.. seems soft and pliable so will see how it goes... reckons the 46 was a pain in the backside cause of the single belt and me converting to twin vario would be a great idea.. (mind you he also reckons putting the 1400 renault engine in the front to go with it... lol)
