Hi The green Daf 44 that belonged to Simon from Newbury is now in its new home in Rotherham South Yorkshire. I have now been able to go around her with a fine tooth comb, and must say that apart from the damaged drivers door and broken hinges, she is in very good condition. She was a none starter due to being stood for over a year, once home the battery was charged and checked, and was still good. The engine still would not start, fuel was getting from the tank to the pump but not from the pump to the carburettor, the pump was removed, stripped, cleaned, reassembled and refitted, and after turning over a few times the engine burst into life and ticked over very smoothly after standing for so long. Any other 44 owner out there could you please advise the best oil to use in this engine, as I have never had a 2 pot air cooled engine before. Are there any other Daf owner around my area. I have yet to go through the large number of spares that came with the car, but as soon as possible I will let you now what is available. Will keep you all informed of progress.

Hello. Really liked that green colour!
Oil - get a decent 10w/40. You can use 20w/50 but experience suggests that the thinner 10/40 is more sympathetic. Personally I am using Castrol currently in my 33 but have previously used Valvoline.
Other known owners nearby - Joe in Chesterfield, Paul DAF Daffer in Ripley, DAF OC HQ in Bolsover, me in Notts, Mike and Rob in Lincs. And more around the country.
So you're not alone.
Good luck!

Thanks Richard, I like the look of your 33. Had a 55 Saloon and a 66 estate in the early 80s and its nice to have a Daf again, may be a while before she's back on the road, but will try my best.
About the oil is it best to use synthetic, semi synthetic or do I need to go right back to mineral.
Were about in Notts are you, I have friends in Retford I visit every week, again thanks for the info.

Re. oil. The advice given to me was a firm no to synthetic oil, it can ruin the seals and end in a total engine rebuild. Halfords classic oil seems to be highly regarded and well priced, this is what I use. Hope all goes well getting her back on the road and I look forward to seeing her trundle around the roads of Yorkshire.

I'm pretty sure I use semi-synthetic. Will have a look at the can tomorrow.
Regarding my location, although I know some of the Retford area, I am way down in south Notts!
By the way, are you the gentleman who emailed/messaged asking about paying online for club membership a few weeks ago?

There are plenty of members around this area so you are in good company. I would be happy to lend a hand (which is about all I can do as I have no real technical knowledge) and please, POST SOME PICTURES! We love to see them.

Sorry that putting photos up can cause some headaches... I should be fairly straightforward - best way is to make sure that the photos are not huge memory/resolution and they need to be stored on your computer. Then when you write a message, click on the grey "Add Attachment" button, and that should then give you an option to upload pics from your computer.
The other way is to store your photos on a site like Photobucket or Flickr, then post a link to those sites on here.
Good luck!

Update on Sophia. The last few weeks I have managed to strip clean and reassemble the brakes, the only problem being the N/s front, which someone had assembled wrongly the shoes damaging the dust seals, fortunately there was a set of new seals amongst the spares that came with her. Last week I got her up onto stands so I could get underneath and check for rot, none found then removed the vario guards and found the belts and pulleys to be in very good condition, the only fault one of the vacuum pipes was not attached ,replaced. This week I have being removing the front of the car ready to move the engine forewords to be able to replace the brackets between the exhaust manifolds to the engine mounts and also clean the engine bay. Thank you all, I may call you up on it. This Sunday will be the first day for a while I will have some time set aside to investigate things! I've only just realised she hasn't been out of the garage (if you can call it that with no door!) since July!

Well done that man!
Once you have the clutch spline/prop all lined up it should be as easy to get in as it was to get out.

Attachment Deleted Attachment Deleted Decided to do some other work on the engine while it out. First job check the clutch, glad I did 5 of the 8 clutch shoe retaining pins are missing, fortunately the rest of the clutch looks OK. Have removed the covers from around the cylinder for repainting, what's the reason for all the fibre packing inside them.

Hi all Sophia's engine finely back in and all connected up again, as soon as the fuel was through she started and ticked over very smoothly, much to my amazement. The front panel was rather rusty behind the trim, I had another panel in good condition but the wrong colour green, so this was stripped rust treated and then resprayed. This was my first attempt at painting a panel I am very pleased with the result, and it is a very good match. Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

Update on Sophia, still waiting the repair to her hinges and door. I think Sophia is getting a bit fed up as she is getting a bit temprimental, I can't select forwards drive, me thinks some adjustment is required. The headlights will not work on dip beam, high beam being OK. On a more positive note both front wheels cleaned, derusted repainted and new tyres fitted, just the rear wheels to do now the tyres being OK. Matt from Essex Dafs has found me a good drivers seat in the correct colour to replace Sophia's badly split one, that's a good reason to go to Princethorpe to collect it.
