Ok, thanks for that John. Not that the DAF will be going anywhere, the other one of the shock absorber mounts has gone now Is there anything I can do to reinforce them? And I had a nice trip planned tomorrow. At least I have now got matching dents in the bonnet...

Weekend or no weekend, sadly I don't have a top rubber for this side So I have no cars on the road yet again grrr. Is there any way I can reinforce the top mount? I'm thinking a metal strap over the top washer, which then is held down by the existing mounting bolts, or would this not be possible as it stops some of the flexibility?

I replaced te inlet manifold hose today, and she of course needed to be adjusted from scratch...
Now purring like a two cylinder kitten.
Just the top rubber and I'm on my way again!
Another question (they keep on coming!), is it normal for the oil thingamajig valvey thing to puff out air? Or is that the whole point?

As for the puffing, it's fairly normal. If everything's in good condition what it's actually doing is puffing out then sucking in (but you won't notice the sucking bit) because of the opposed pistons. As they go "down" the bores (towards the centre) the crankcase gets effectively smaller, then gets bigger again as they go "up". On a more conventional layout you always have one piston going "up" as another goes "down", so it balances out and you don't get the puffing effect - if you do, it's a sign of worn rings.
A quick check for blow-by is to remove the filler and put your hand over it with the engine running. If it's normal breathing then you won't get much of a pressure build-up - you'll feel pressure as it "puffs" but it won't build up. If there's serious blow-by you'll be hard pressed to keep your hand on the hole because the pressure will keep building every time the engine fires.

I have just tried that, and there is no pressure build up Nor is there any smoke out of the exhaust Just the rubber now. And re-bleed the brakes.

And I nipped to town (Nottm) in the Volvo (OK yah) this afternoon to have a word with a bodyshop that I have used before, to see whether they might like the job of sorting the minorish bits of rust on the door bottoms and wheel arches.
The answer was "yes" and it's booked in for a few weeks time.
With the better weather coming along, I sense an "unofficial" Notts Variomatic do!

Richard yes indeed, funny you should say that, i drove through Linby today and thought that it would be nice for a sunday dinner time drink and a few piccys of the cars in the village, (linby always reminds me of some village from the 60's and 70;s that were used in avengers and such like!. and re the ovlov good that you are taking care of her!

We shall see. You will have noticed reference in the latest magazine to a do in May "possibly in North Notts". Well, to be honest, nothing really planned yet and I am conscious that as the AGM will be at the usual place, folk may not want to do an event so near.
So we may just find a totally different place (maybe Yorks somewhere) for the May do, then we Notts/Derby folk can be rebellious and go to somewhere like Linby on another date?... I know Linby, and agree Paul - nice village and very "Avengerish". Quite a few villages like that round these parts.
And the "Ovlov" - well, i still rather like it and, er, I've gone and acquired some (genuine Volvo from Foggy James of V300mania) alloy wheels for it! What's more, I have rubbed them down and painted them meself in original silver. Hope to get a new set of tyres soon - slightly wider. Eeeeek!!

Richard with a spray can runs for cover wider tyres very racey ;D you will be after a hella grill with spot lights in next you do seem to have the bug alright maybe you should see the doctor. york sound good a nice part of the world.

Ha Stefan. Maybe this is some sort of therapy? No, I don't intend to get a fancy grille unless I get a "blank" one and put a DAF badge on it! This may all still be a passing phase - i had both the Variomatics out the other day, and both the 77 and Blue Bullet behaved. But I can only use one at a time of course, and I am sort of committed, for obvious reasons, the the Bullet.

Had a great drive to work today Weird problem again though, as I had before on the other side, the shock absorber seems to be locked solid, there is no movement at all. It was fine before though, any ideas?

hi.
you might find that the shock was solid before and all the movement was in the rubber mount.
it can be very deceiving. especially as the other side was so bad to start with.
strip this shock down as well.
at least you will know that both front shocks are ok when you finish.

Had a look at the dampers today, one side is raining out oil, but goes up and down (so it's not ruining my top mount) The other one is clean as a whistle, not marked no has it got any rust. When jacking up the car it does extend as it should, but it will not go in all the way. Is there anything temporary I can do to get the flex back, even if that means less damping?

Hi Onne, you could at one time get shock absorber oil, not seen it at Halfords recently? But I would think hydraulic oil would do the trick,we use hydraulic 46 in most of our hydraulic lifts and it is about the same grade in hydraulic jacks. you may find that "Machine Mart" may do it for hydraulic jacks or if you know a local farmer, he will be using it on his tractors.

Most motorcycle shops will sell you Hydraulic damper fluid - in various grades - 'cos quite a lot of them have refillable shocks

Thought I'd give an update Re-bled the brakes today, bit better, now all the mud has gone from the rears (but crikey 6mm bleed nipples!) Also found out why madam doesn't like to start, points had closed up... (Yes I am ignorant) Tightened the vacuum hoses, lot better now, even have kickdown! Shock absorbers are still a big worry though.
