Well, if the pedal varies noticably in feel (including travel) from one application to another there is one unavoidable fact - there's a fault with them. If it's not air or loose adjustment then it's a case of going through the whole system until you find it.
If Gladys has a servo then that's the first place to look. Disconnect the vacuum to it and see if you get constant feel without it. If you do then rebuild (if you can find parts) or new servo.
Then continue by replacing all flexi hoses, no matter what they look like or how long they've been on, in case one is acting as a valve intermittently. You won't be able to see that by inspection so sling the lot and get new on. If that doesn't cure it then the cylinders (including master) will need very careful examination and replacing if there's the slightest doubt.
Pain in the neck, and not cheap, but a lot less pain in the neck and a lot cheaper than an accident caused by a brake fault - insurers really love finding faults like that cos they can use it to claim any payments back off you.

I think that the smell is exhaust paint as its new and new exhaust rubbers. watch that they have not blown out a wheel cylinder or master cylinder when they stood on the brakes for the MOT.... they did use the tapperley meter didnt they? not the rolling road and you are taking off the handbrake?? ;D

no rollers on my car dafdaffer. The cylinders aren't leaking although the one flexi has a slight twist in it could be the prob. Also front brakes probably need adjustment. I freed of the rears and but was unable to free the adjusters on the front. Time to pull the hubs and get vicous with the penertrating oil and 4 foot breaker bar.
Oh and I put the same rubbers back on as I didn't have any and they looked ok.
Oh and on a lesser note I ran over my heat exchanger pipe so now need a new one

;D ;D Join the club Paul, I ran over my hotspot pipe at full blast down the A12 a few weeks ago!! ;D ;D
The pipe snapped off where it exits the heat exchanger. The work around was to put a plate of thin metal over the whole and clamped down with an exhaust u bolt. I put some gun gum over the repair although it didn't really need it and it's still going strong (he says, tempting the fate of the Daf gods)!! ;D

Exhaust bandage works well and neatly. Soak bandage and roll up into a cylinder so it's a tight fit in the stub that normally seems to be left on the exchanger. Smother in gun-gum, force into hole and tie over with magic mendy wire. Betty was done like that on the way back from Devon last October cos it was all I had to hand when she decided to blow and she's still happy about 5000 miles later

i meant the rubber ducting. Theres a metal band around the end thats now flat. My hotspot pipes are long gone holes are plugged with coach bolts

Cut the band off and use without (neither of ours have them and work just fine), or fit a big Jubilee clip.

Gladys has got her dent knocked out today. Which required lots of swearing as the door card didn't want to part company with the door. I got it off got the hammer out decided it was too big to get decent access with so used the butt end of a screwdriver. Success there are a few creases and a bit of scratching but you wouldn't really notice without looking closely. I will whack a skim coat of filler and some paint on and you would never know. Then I decided to tackle the blown tailight. This should have been a straight forward job. It wasn't! First I found that the screw head and been stripped but I was just about able to turn it. Then I wondered why it wasn't coming out. That would be because the captive nut was spinning in its mounting. This resulted in drilling the screw out. Got it out only to then not catch it quick enough. It fell on the ground and cracked into 4 peices. So has anyone got a 44 left hand tail lense? Mine is currently held together with selotape and and attached with one screw and double sided tape. whoopsie

Today for the very first time Gladys refused to start. She was fine since but it took 5 attempts to get her going with a warm engine. She will normally start straight away with next to no delay from turning the key when warm.
Maybe I shouldn't have disturbed her she must have been having a dutch moment

Arrggghhh. Could today get any worse? Just went outside to discover that some little scrote had been at my car again!! Spot the difference Bet that will be one of those impossible to replace bits as well. I feel fit to kill. Really now a very unhappy chappy. Paul

Hasn't been anywhere between being there and being missing. What the photo didn't show was that their where a couple of fragments left in the rear mount holes, which I removed with pliers on sharp edge grounds. That stick in the pic looks suspiciously like the tool used to remove it.
As you said Mr Grinder it is an easy fix and doesn't look stupid without it

Spent this morning refitting the exhaust which fell off yesterday. Looked over and thought why is that brake drum wet?
Finished and pulled the car backwards and forwards 10yds to level the suspension and discovered the brake pedal going to the floor. I think ive popped another brake cylinder. So now both my cars are undrivable hopefully one will be back on the road by this time next week

Are you using chip oil as brake fluid or something? I've only ever had one brake seal fail in something like 25 years / 1/4 million miles on the road!

Ok ill admit to having noticed dampness around the cylinder last time I pulled the hub about 4 months ago and thinking I need to change that ;D . Now I do ;D

Just spent the last 3 hours playing fix the DAF. The leaky brake cylinder has been removed and cleaned up. Looking at it the seals dont look to bad other than one dirt guard. Saying that I think they will be changed. What worrys me more is the condition of the boar. Would you chuck this and replace it? Cleaning up has greatly improved the seal and it is hard to push under finger strength now before it was easy. Pictures Not very pretty really grease gunk and brake fluid every where me attempting to get the camera to focus on the boar of the slave cylinder Slave cylinder all cleaned up the dust caps one is perished and holed the pistons could look better but are intact and the all important seals have cleaned up well. Inside of the brake drum cleaned up nicely and looks okay Then it started raining. Has anyone got a seals kit or another cylinder they can sell me? Paul

I cant buy from the club at the moment as my membership has expired and at the moment the money needs to be fixing the car. Danny has both cylinders and seal kits in stock. The plan is if its not extortionate I will replace both rear cylinders and brake lines. This has been caused by rust from watery brake fluid thus the other cylinder is likely to go as well as the lines. Both front cylinders where replaced when I bought the car.

£97 for 2 brake cylinder brand new a set of shoes, and new brake lines including postage which I think is worth doing

Brakes are always worth sorting out Paul and that's why I'm about to buy a master cylinder repair kit from Danny at €19:95 as I have a NOS master from Matt but the rod is jammed.
Just be patient with Danny at the moment though, he's just come out of Hospital having fallen 2.5 metres, and landed directly on his head.

Hopefully Bruce will be sorted when my carb overhaul kit arrives later this week. As for Gladys if the cylinder shes got will hold fluid it may find its way back onto the car untill the new ones arrive.
