Thats handy then I dont have to buy new mountings then ;D. More pennys in the belt fund. Am I right in thinking that a slack drive belt will not cause problems on the MOT but exhaust come seive will ;D

Loose (or even missing) belt isn't an issue for the MOT as long as it can drive into and out of the test centre. If the tester doesn't advise on it, though, then find another tester or send yours to Specsavers because even though it's not covered by MOT there are safety implications in terms of handling. A decent tester will make sure you're aware!

you cant see them 100% with the guards on but they can advise as jo says as they dont have a diff, when i first brought biddy the belts were so slack that i could put a loop in it. the handling was very scary

I can squeeze one belt so that it touches itself but the other has a 2mm pulley gap and yes the handling is dicey. If I can MOT it whilst im sourcing belts is handy even if the car is not being used. The car is stored on the road so needs to be MOTd to be legal.
p.s. she ate her guards thus no longer has any fitted

The car is stored on the road so needs to be MOTd to be legal. Nope, that's a myth. The only thing you need while parked is valid road tax (you don't even legally need insurance). The tax is required for "using or keeping" on a road whereas MOT and inusrance are only needed for "using". The courts have long ago established that being parked doesn't count as using. Of course, you need MOT and insurance to get road tax in the first place but you can do that with a day left on each and then park to your hearts content for 6 or 12 months if you want

Danny come up trumps. With all the parts needing replacing brand new for £94.50 including shipping.
For that price if I do that I can repair it and forget about it for a number of years. She gets a new silencer in that and maybe will stop giving me earache.

Not happy just sprayed a wing with nice fresh paint to watch it all crack up and slide straight off again. I suppose I better flat it back to bare metal this time grrrr.

Wing is looking good. ;D one more coat of snot green in the morning and thats finished.
Although she is still throwing a strop. The list of things for the MOT is mounting.
Exhaust Belts Some welding to the base of both passenger side wings.
Oh and as of today sort out the fuel leak thats developed. It appears to be line rather than tank. I was able to see some crystalisation on the line as it enters the tank visible from a quick look at the right rear. This also appears to be where its leaking from. Oh and Murphys law strikes again as she "had" 1/2 a tank of very expensive welsh unleaded in her.

Ive decided this thread needs more pictures ;D so here are some. Some photos from yesterday The day started with a bit of this I then attacked her with some wet and dry This is half way through Ive put a shonky photo of the exhaust woes in and a photo of where the fuel leak coming from. Is this pipe easily available or am I going to have to order it from danny? Paul

Yeah its not as good as I hoped for but hopefully I will be better at the next one. Oh and the leaking fuel pipe just gave way completly. Result floods of petrol and me francticly trying to find some pipe the right size. Everything I can get hold of seems a bit big.

I empathise Paul, but at least your house did not get permeated with the smell of petrol for two weeks! ;D Thankfully I have a forgiving missus! I found that I could drain the tank into a petrol can, angling the plastic filler spout of the can around the little metal pipe that exits the tank, avoiding most of the spillage. Assuming the 44 tank is similar design to the 33 that is...

A brilliant trip to essex DAF where I thourighly enjoyed myself so thanks to all involved. Unfortunalty Gladys is ungratefull, on the way down she had a turn and cut out on the motorway and about 2 seconds later restarted and ran fine for the rest of the journey and most of today. On the way back Eric noticed a tail light was out so I when I stopped at Kens we changed the bulb to no avail. As it was getting late I decided as it was getting late to stop another night out rather than drive back late at night with a light out whilst fairly exhausted. Im glad I made that decision as upon pulling into travelodge car park Gladys died on me again. Problem is electrics I think as everything went at once, headlights, brake lights, indicators, sidelights, and engine. I will be playing around tomorrow and am hoping its just a few fuses blown by a broken engine earth strap. Hopefully I will be on my way and back tomorrow.

hi paul.
to affect everything, an electrical fault can only be a broken/loose battery lead, or a dead battery. should be easy enough to find.
if you have jump leads you can bypass the broken lead to get home. i have done that a few times in the past.

Hi Paul, Glad you enjoyed your stay in Essex and we enjoyed being your host! I'm sorry to hear that Gladys has thrown a strop, especially as she had behaved so well today. I hope you saw me wave you off at my junction as once Eric's 55 found it's legs on the A12 we started playing leapfrog. I did slow down approaching my exit but you were a couple of cars back. I had a similar moment in Rover recently when I was reversing her down an allyway. Half way down the alleyway the engine coughed and cut out and wouldn't restart. It was the ht lead being a bad connection at the coil. Hopefully it will be something simply to fix on Gladys.

Pictures that I had forgotten about. You saw me taking the car apart to spray this is what it ended up looking like. It is shinier now as I am sure you will soon see on the essex DAF thread. and a word to the wise if your fuel line starts looking like this dont fiddle at least untill you have a bucket unless you have a fetish for dancing in puddles of petrol.

Brakes adjusted up. Nice and tight. shiny new exhaust fitted. I cant find any corrosion that will worry Mr MOT so I think were good to go on Monday. She is so much quieter its unbelievable. Quite enough to hear the transmission whine and almost silent on tickover, having that second silencer with baffles in it makes the world of difference

Gladys wearing her new shiny exhaust and essex souvenir sadly it doesn't show up well in the pic. A shiny exhaust pipe makes her look so much better and a lot quieter, its unbelievable how quite she is now. I keep wondering if traffic if she still running or not, look down see the dynomo light flickr yep she still running.

Nearside front shock absorber light misting of oil Offside front shock absorber light misting of oil Oil leak.
Verbal advisories.
Slight blow exhaust joint new clamp fixed Brake flexi slightly kinked though not enough to effect braking performance or officially advise.

Home now. She drove with noticebly more grunt on the way back i would think down to new exhaust. Did notice some resonance at certain RPM but I did manage to run over one of my heat exchanger pipes.
Another couple of things noticed on the way back.
The brakes have a lot less pedal travel when going down hill and I also noticed a burning clutch smell when going up steep hills. Im actually wondering whether the brakes where binding when going up hill as she was a bit sluggish on the hills.
Anyone able to think of a reason for this bizzare trait?

Air in the system or misadjusted drums. Going uphill you tend not to use them so, when you do apply them, the excess travel shows. Going downhill you use them more which gives the pedal a chance to "pump up".
If the brakes were binding enough to notice on the road then it shouldn't have passed an MOT yesterday and needs to be looked at fast before you boil the brake fluid and find yourself brakeless (really not a nice feeling). If they were binding they also couldn't care less whether you were going uphill, downhill or flying upsde-down over the Alps having filled the inside with helium - they'd still bind.
None of that makes clutch burning smells though.

Id say they weren't binding then because it rolls lovely and I can turn the drums by hand with 2 fingers. As I say the smell of hot rubber was only there going up steep hills on full throttle. That may be purely that ive been driving Bruce and have got used to those extra horses. Still want to find out where that smells coming from though I really dont fancy pulling the engine again. The brakes have plenty of stop and will lock the wheels regardless of gradient its just when going downhill there next to no travel at all in the pedal.
