The cylinder head fitted to the R5 Gordini is a real piece of art with hemispherical combustion chambers and large straight ports. Designed to work on a standard Cleon block the rocker gear is quite complex to work the inclined valves from a single block mounted camshaft. The whole assembly was filthy and took a fair bit of cleaning, this was stage 2! All stripped, cleaned and reassembled ready to refit All together in one piece at last. I still have to set the valve clearances and fit the ancillaries but next job is to pull the original engine from the Volvo and strip the bits off of it that I need.

Fantastic news Jeroen! What carburettor are you going to use? Any other modifications?

i want to use a 123 ignition its computerrized and i am driving in my 55 with 1300 engine its fantastic but the alpine shaft is longer than normal so it has to be adapted to the alpine it has a fixed position for the alpine motor, the curve is already in the ignition,it is for programmed for more engines you only set a dip switch for the correct engine
and i want the standard carburettor 90 pk is enough. i am going from 60 (1300)to 90. i need the pk's for my caravan i already have the exaust via daf hobby the exaust making my self gona weld is under the car and Swiss dave what cost a new 340 carburettor from your supplier?

Some more, slow but steady progress. Work has provided some help for the project this month, firstly I discovered that a customer that I have dealt with for years has access to ceramic coating techniques and offered to coat it for free. The snazzy 4 into 1 exhaust manifold from Daf Hobby has gone away to be coated in a bright silver colour. It could have been any colour but I guess I lack imagination lol! The ceramic coating is a heat barrier and helps lower engine bay temperatures, the hotter exhaust gasses also travel faster so this should make the manifold more effective too and help it make power. The other good news being that I managed to swop an overlocker ( a type of sewing machine) that I had in stock and owed me very little for an engine hoist. The hoist is massive and capable of lifting 1000kg of engine which is a little OTT for a little Renault Cleon engine, needless to say the engine came out very easily.
The next stage is to swop the flywheel, clutch, waterpump etc from old to new engines and then fit the new one. The clutch will need bits replacing to rid it of the rattle it has but I'm not sure which yet.
There's also a chance that I may add some more complication and expense to the project in the form of a supercharger. Sprintex in Australia do some fantastic small twin screw superchargers, I have been in contact and they recommend the S5-150 which I would run as a draw through setup with an SU carb. I'm still thinking it over at the moment, internet opinions seem to vary a lot as to how much the CVT gearbox/driveshaft can handle.

What are you going to do wiith the break mastervac? I don't think it will fit thanks to the carburator (not enough space normaly..)

Looking more like a Daf engine now that the water pump is fitted on the front of it. The rear cover panel is on the back of the head too.  The valve clearances are set and I have rebuilt the distributor and set the static ignition timing. [a
href="http://s151.photobucket.com/user/dangerousdave_03/media/image-130.jpg.html"] [/a][/p] The front engine mounting problem has been solved by Daf Hobby who do a Daf sized rubber mounting with the correct (different to the Daf ) thread for the B14 engine block, these are on their way with the new clutch parts. The new problem that I have is the alternator mounting. The eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed the different inlet manifold fitted, I have gone full circle on the plans for induction and am back on to twin 40 webers. This means that I cannot fit the standard alternator where it would normally be as the front carb would be in the way. Some previous conversions I've seen have relocated the alternator to low down on the other side of the engine, sort of below the water pump. I am going to try a smaller alternator in the standard position using a homemade swivel mounting bracket but the original tensioning bracket. If the original single Weber carb and manifold were used I think you could fit the alternator as standard although a bracket would need making any way as the head is wider and doesn't have the relevant bolt holes in the right place. The other change with the new manifolds is to use an electric fuel pump so I have made a blanking plate and removed the recently fitted standard pump.

Hi all, some more bits done, the inlet manifolds are now fitted for good after many hours of port matching, the carbs have been trial fitted and the linkage sorted out. The smaller alternator still wasn't small enough to fit in the standard position so will have to be fitted lower. I am using the original tensioner upside down and repositioned with an alloy bracket. I've cut a piece of angle for the main mounting bracket and that's away being welded up The exhaust manifold came back from being ceramic coating today too If all goes to plan I should be fitting it the weekend after next. :-)

nice work! dave my engine is also ready to put in the car.
i want the Original carburettor ,i think ist's to noisy 4 of them. i dont want more than 90 pk,the aluminium axle is going down with so much power. the next foto is how i am going make the alternators
on the other side the Original alternator and the other side the alternator for my caravan i have enough power to provide enough electra thanks

That looks excellent Jeroen, great progress! I have decided to fit a standard V66 clutch and the new one from Daf hobby was fitted to the engine. The flywheel is the original V66 one from the B130 engine and fitted fine. I have a friend coming around on Saturday to get the engine fitted then, in the meantime I'm attending to some small rust patches in the engine bay while it's empty but it's damn cold out there! I have ordered some cans of cellulose from Jawel paints in Volvo 113 and have treated the areas of surface rust ready to prime. I keep trying to find bits to do in the warm where the engine is rather than the cold garage, so tonight I finished the rocker cover in silver high temp engine enamel with polished lettering detail.

Well, it's in but the alternator relocation has been a pain and fought me all the way! The bracket came back from being welded slightly altered from plan which meant either starting again with the bracket or tweaking the other bracket with spacers to make it work. Once this was done I found that the original fan belt was too long and a shorter one would be needed but more worryingly I'd missed the fact that the v belt would foul on the long bolt in the water pump! To solve both problems I will be using the tensioner fitted to the Gordini engine in its original home, the standard Daf fan belt is now fine. The engine went into the car really well, with me underneath lining up the prop shaft and Neil on the engine hoist everything lined up great. The servo is now up on the bulkhead to give clearance for the carbs, I need to make up some new brake pipes for that yet.

jeroen: do you have the exhaust manifold? i still have a brain new one for sale, if you have difficulties or long delay at dafhobby to get one. 2015 news : We did 1st place in the race "coupe glacée daf" this year in Serre Chevalier ice race, in the category "endurance", we build a reinforced axle with 2 flectors and big brake calipers. We are going for the week-end to the historic rallye monte-carlo as spectators, with the daf of course and if the snow is still here we will bring our studs tires to do the show before the race!

Hi all, I'm getting close now, if all goes to plan I will get it started this weekend although it will be without the exhaust. The link pipe from the manifold to the system fouls the anti roll bar so has had to go away for some surgery. The exhaust itself fitted well and looks very smart under there. The carbs are now properly fitted and plumbed in to the new mechanical fuel pump I was going to use with the standard carb. I know I've changed my mind a few times on the fuel pump now but when I went to fit the electric pump near the tank I struggled not only for space but with my conscience too for drilling mounting holes into that immaculate 37 year old boot floor. Instead I decided on a more serious attempt at fitting the mechanical pump which in the end bore fruit. The standard Daf type definitely wouldn't work as it's too tall but the slightly shorter R4 one combined with a trim of the bottom of the inlet manifold did just fit. Much simpler, no pressure issues hopefully and the car structure is still original. The vacuum resorvoir is plumbed in to the inlets using silicone hose with 8mm copper fuel pipe inside it so that I could bend it to shape This is the final alternator and fan belt tensioner solution. The belt is adjustable on either the alternator or the R5 tensioner.

this seems to be a VERY nice/clean job !! It's about to run ! why didn't you tried to fix the alternator on the ignition side? (as a 55 dynamo jeroen , i have my own spike tire, i think you can also rent them at the circuit, don't hesitate to ask them. For your information, Patrick Fayet from France is my Dad, if you need to communicate with him you can send me a message. I'm preparing a YOUTUBE video about the Daf, the race and the work on it, it will be online soon. News about the daf, i just got this : Attachment Deleted
