True, it's the forking out of 70 odd pounds that strikes me.
AND you can't hit them with a hammer to get them going again!

I found replacing the evil thing with a mechanical pump made things much better.

I might do that... My engine has the cover plate I think.

hi.
an A series engine will have a cover plate for a mechanical pump and they are easy enough to fit.
all i ever used to do with the su pumps was to clean them and remount them on the bulkhead somewhere so i could get at it if it ever broke down. none of them ever did.
give me a 40 year old SU pump over a modern mechanical pump any day. the SU pump will still be going after the "new" pump has given up.

I think I'll get some points for the old pump.
But it's good to be able to have a backup!. I am not sure whether all (early) A-series had the provision for the mechanical fuel pump, I don't know whether the Austin A30 had one (the car for which the engine was partly designed after all)

I know... I can't even come round to yours to help with the garage!
I have some new points on order for the pump though, should be here tomorrow. Also need to fix (read bodge) the engine mounting rubbers on the DAF, get some new plugs, some new leads and Hans is my uncle (don't have an uncle Bob...)

Not a problem it will just take me a bit longer doing it my self (think my brother may be coming round so he will have to do some work) They have given out an ok day tomorrow so you should be able to work on one of your cars at least so you should be one the road again soon. When was it you wanted to come round and use the polishing mop.

The wedding I am attending is on saturday the 14th, so possibly the weekend before that (the 7th or 8th) I will then hopefully have a roadworthy DAF again so I can leave the Minor in the garage all that week so she won't get dirty If the post is early tomorrow (awaiting the points) I am more than happy to come over and lend a hand again if you want.

Hi Folks If the problem is with the Daf go on with Joe has said. If it is the Mogy chech the little flexible lead in the distributer. worked great at tick over but as soon as you put your foot down it died!

Did you manage to find out Paul? Also I fixed (read bodged) my heat exchangers: I case you are wondering it's a sock. For the people with interest in concours, it's a matching pair!

One thing I did notice the lack of hot air when on the move. Seems very logical to me (more airflow, and it was cold today) Or should I stick another sock in it? Blank off the grille?

Have you got that "drop/slide in" plastic panel that you put behind the grille in cold weather? (tho I never have!)

I'll see whether I can get some plexiglass today then.
Does it need to have any holes to let air in?

Ok Took her out for a trip today, the engine mount is (just about) holding on. Found a reason why the idle is rough, the rubber sleeve pictured some time ago is burst at the bottom. Any idea how hard these are to replace?

Not sure, Onne, I'll be checking ours when the engine's out but I'd guess it shouldn't be too bad. It may be easiest to remove the "stub" manifold from the r/hand (driver side) cylinder - pipes like that quite often let go easiest by twisting them.
It's explain most, if not all, of your other running problems as well - and possibly even your lack of heating. If that cylinder's sucking lots of air then it'll run very very cool - weak mixture only makes it hot up to a point, then it stops firing at all and makes no heat. It's that side that feeds hot air to the driver's vents.
You may well have been driving the world's first 373cc, single-cylinder, Daf for the past week or two ;D

hi onne.
that rubber hose is on par with the water pump bypass hose on the A series engine in your moggy. if you have change one then you will know what i mean. i know experienced mechanics(25-30 years) who say it impossible to change that pipe without removing the head. i have changed the same pipe at the side of the road with only a swiss army knife. (small hands help here)
there is a knack to them that cannot be taught. i just cut the old one off and use washing up liquid to slide the new one in place. it can be done....
good luck.
paul44
ps. a 2" section of radiator hose the right size is usually free if you talk nicely to your motor factors and works really well. (3 years before i sold the VW beach buggy and was still going strong.)

Don´t even start on the bypass hose I replaced that with some straight pipe long ago. The Daf is on duty for work tomorrow though, whether she is running on 1 or 2! Does anyone know the diameter of the inlet manifold? I´ll have to go to my motor factors tomorrow, I´ll get some shiny BP6HS plugs, some leads and a length of pipe for the aforementioned...

I´m sure I can manage.
I have changed the engine in my minor a couple of times, so I'll be ok.
Not used to working with ally though, I'd better use my gentle touch!

09/01/09 MOT passed ODO 19441 17 litres (7/8s full) 10/01/09 Brassington meet ODO 19526 14 litres (full) about 37 mpg 17/01/09 Three days to work and back and a trip into Derbyshire ODO 19653 22.5 litres about 25 mpg (127 miles, 4,96 gallons) (Just for John The Bear 20.8 MPG (US)) 27/01/09 ODO 19791, 20,2 litres on 138 miles 31.8 MPG. So there is an improvement

Over the last week I have seen the engine mount get worse and worse... which is not a good thing...
As I can't afford the proper job at 45 pounds a piece I'd like to use the bolt through the rubber method.
Is it possible to remove an engine mounting rubber with the engine in place?

hi.
should be easy enough to get the mount out.
take off the nuts on the mount. cut a pieco of wood the same thickness as the mount. put a jack (or rope from above) as close to the mount as possible to put as little strain as possible on the other mounts. jack up the engine just enough to remove the mount. put wood in instead of mount and lower engine back gently. you may have to use a bar/screwdriver to line the bolt up when you are putting the mount back.
i have used this system on minis, fords,VWs and many other cars without a problem.
good luck.
let us know how it goes.

Onne, having just pulled Betty's engine, I think you probably could remove a mount but the wooden block trick won't work.
Because the engine "hangs" off the side of the rubber blocks you'll almost certainly have to slacken all the other mounts, then pull the engine forward as far as you can to slip the mount out. Would be worth putting a trolley jack under it for support as you do it - the oil strainer plate seems to be pretty close to the balance point if you do.

We managed to remove the mount with the engine in, and replaced it with two long bolts, spring washers and a bit of loctite. Also I have uploaded a new video: Not the best quality I have to admit, but at least you can hear the engine

Took her to work today... everything went hunky dory until I got hit by an LDV van doing 5 mph.
I now have a dent on the wheel arch and a scrape in the same place. Had to travel 11 miles to get home, and got hit less than 500 yds from home. Obviously got stuck behind all the modern cars with wrong wheel drive.
I have to say Variomatic ROCKS and got me up the hill no problem whatsoever.
Also a tip, don't try and use your hand + arm to stop a collision, it won't work and it hurts.
